Rooted in Nature: Calcu Wines’ Sustainable Winemaking Journey

By : Amy harrison
In this blog, we’re having a relaxed chat with the team behind Calcu Wines—a brand that’s all about celebrating the land, tradition, and sustainability. At Rouge & Co, we’re genuinely proud to be the importers of Calcu, bringing these unique Chilean wines to you. We hope you enjoy hearing their story as much as we enjoyed sharing it, and that it brings a little extra meaning to every bottle you open.
“The name ‘Calcu’ reflects our deep connection to the land—hill and stone.”
Can you share the vision behind the creation of Calcu Wines?
Calcu Wines was born from a desire to build upon what we learned at Maquis—our very first vineyard—and to create something even more ambitious, with a long-term vision. We wanted to find a location that could truly express freshness, elegance, and natural balance in the wines. That search led us to the Colchagua Valley, a cooler climate zone with clay and granite soils offering excellent drainage. It’s the perfect place to craft wines rich in complexity and crisp fruit character.
The name “Calcu” reflects our deep connection to the land—derived from the native words Calel meaning hill, and Cura meaning stone—evoking the vineyard’s unique position on the coastal mountain range with decomposed granite soils that shape the personality of our wines.
What makes the Colchagua Valley such an exceptional place for wine production?
Colchagua Valley is a historic winemaking region, just an hour and a half south of Santiago, with nearly 300 years of tradition. It’s renowned for its outstanding reds but what’s truly fascinating is its diversity—a mosaic of climates and micro-terroirs divided into three distinct zones: Andes Colchagua, Central Colchagua, and Coastal Colchagua.
Our vineyard sits in the Coastal Colchagua, near the Pacific Ocean, where the soils are some of the oldest and most complex in the region. The granitic, clay-rich soils, combined with excellent drainage and low organic matter, create ideal conditions for wines with a unique depth and freshness.
“Our philosophy is all about letting the vineyard speak for itself.”
How do you highlight this special terroir in your winemaking?
Our philosophy is all about letting the vineyard speak for itself. It begins with meticulous vineyard management—balancing pruning, irrigation, and picking times to achieve harmony between ripeness, acidity, and tannins.
We embrace minimal intervention, avoiding synthetic fertilizers and herbicides, and controlling yields carefully to preserve natural balance. In the winery, we handle grapes gently—managing oxygen exposure, wood aging, and avoiding adjustments to acidity or alcohol—to maintain that fresh, natural character that reflects the vineyard’s true essence.
Could you tell us more about your unique vineyard design?
Absolutely. Our nearly 100 hectares are divided into 166 micro-plots, each averaging just 0.6 hectares.
This design was created with the landscape in mind—respecting native rock formations, ravines, and local flora. After extensive soil analysis and fieldwork, each plot was carefully positioned to prevent erosion and protect vital clay soils that contribute to wine quality.
This approach not only supports biodiversity but also promotes a sustainable ecosystem, steering clear of monoculture’s negative effects.
Sustainability is clearly important to Calcu. What does it mean for you?
Sustainability for us goes beyond the environment—it’s about honoring the communities around our vineyards as well.
We incorporate eco-friendly practices like using sheep to naturally control weeds and enrich the soil, reducing the need for chemicals. But it also means social responsibility. Our remote location means local job opportunities can be limited, so we’re dedicated to providing meaningful employment, ensuring fair treatment and proper compensation.
For Calcu, sustainability means caring for both the land and the people who call this place home.
It sounds like such a deep connection to the land. What’s your favorite time of year on the vineyard?
Spring—especially September and October—is magical when the vineyard bursts with new life and lush greenery.
But the most intense connection comes during the pre-harvest period. That’s when we watch the grapes closely, “reading” the season to determine the perfect harvest moment. Each vintage brings new challenges and opportunities, and those moments are crucial for ensuring the wine reflects the best of the year.
With such care and attention to detail, where do you see Calcu heading in the future?
Our vision is ongoing growth and refinement—learning from the vineyard year after year to craft wines with even more elegant tannins and a deeper expression of our granite terroir.
We aim to lead in sustainable viticulture in the region, sharing our knowledge to inspire future generations. At the same time, we want to expand Calcu’s global presence, inviting wine lovers worldwide to discover the unique story and character of this remarkable Chilean vineyard.
